Naturopathic medicine weaves current scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. It stimulates the patients own healing power of the body to treat underlying causes of concern/disease. Symptoms patients experience are considered warning signals. These warning signals tell patients the body is not working well and highlight unfavourable lifestyle habits.
In addition to nutrition and lifestyle changes, natural therapies including botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, and traditional Chinese medicine/acupuncture, may also be used during treatments.
In Canada, the naturopathic medical profession’s infrastructure includes accredited naturopathic medical programs, standardized North American Board Exams (NPLEX) and jurisdictional exams, national standards of practice and, regulation in five provinces to date.
